Say what you will about Kanye West but everyone reading this post (you included Mom) knows the chorus from at least one of his songs by heart. He is an artist but not the in the way the Rolling Stones or the Beatles were artists but he is an artist in marketing his personal brand of entertainment. He understands what sells records, and it isn't necessarily talent.
Case study #1: Kanye West vs 50 Cent where the rapper who sells the least records would "retire" from the music industry...did either one of them have the intention to retire? Absolutely not, but this fabricated feud ensured each of them would get a lot of attention, sell a lot of records and make a lot of money.
Case study #2: Kanye's blog was a man's playground from girls to cars to fashion and music (it has recently been shut down...)
