Power Smart Month

October is Power Smart month, and BC Hydro encourages British Columbians to take inventory on what they're currently doing to be more energy efficient and explore new Power Smart lifestyle opportunities. Together, British Columbians can make a big difference! For example:

If every household changed their five most-used incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents, the amount of electricity saved would be enough to light 235,000 households for an entire year.
If all second operating fridges were recycled by BC Hydro's Refrigerator Buy-Back Program, enough electricity would be saved to power the BC legislature for 159 years.
New homebuyers can become Power Smart every day by purchasing Power Smart homes. Power Smart homes allow for greater comfort, lower energy costs and less impact on the environment.

The Power Smart New Home Program encourages builders and developers to incorporate energy-efficient products and design at construction, which is the most cost-effective way to save energy in the home. When buying a new home, consumers should look for the Power Smart Gold and Silver labels. A Power Smart Gold labeled home uses 30 per cent less energy than an average home in today's market.
